STUDIO CYCLE, New York, NY. July 2005 - present.
Partner. Studio Cycle is an Architectural Collective that is particularly interested in designing projects which use new materials and technologies to rethink architectural issues at a variety of scales, ranging from the urban to the handheld. Working at a time when nearly all architectural projects take shape within the computer, we have developed an avid interest in how digital processes effect the physical environment and the possibilities of form-making within the digital realm. However, we are also interested in projects which attempt to solve problems in the "real world," taking into account ideas of sustainability and the lifecycle of materials. It is a belief of many architects that the pursuit of interesting or novel forms in architecture precludes taking into account such political and environmental ideas; we believe that a close investigation into techniques of fabrication and new materials is a way to work simultaneously on questions of form and questions of the larger impact of design. Studio Cycle has recently received a grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council to develop Blowup/Breakdown, an inflatable, biodegradable septic system that packs into a 12" x 18" x 24" box to be deployed in refugee camps around the world.
